Skye Bridge
The Skye Bridge is 500 metres long and is a prestressed concrete haunched structure road bridge and uses the principle of a balanced cantilever in its design.
Construction of the Skye Bridge began in 1992, with the design focused on providing direct access from Kyle of Lochalsh to the Isle of Skye.
Kishorn dry dock was used for the construction of supports for the Skye Bridge, and moved out of Kishorn to Skye in 1994. Each caisson weighed 2300 tonne and support the 250 metre main span of the Skye Bridge. The bridge was built by Miller – Dywidag at a cost of £24m. The dry dock provided a perfect location to support this project.
The caissons were floated out in February 1993 and towed the 15 km distance to the construction site. The bridge was opened in 1995 and carries over 600,000 vehicles per year providing a number of benefits for many, such as shorter journey times and improved reliability in bad weather.
